My name is John Rayyan, I’m the host of the  Always Direct Podcast. I’m here today with Josh York. He is the founder and CEO of GYMGUYZ. Man, I love GYMGUYZ is the is the kind of gym when it comes to your home. So you don’t have to leave your house. You don’t have to leave your office. And we’re gonna learn all about the ins and outs of his growth. And he’s also got a book called Fuel: What It Takes to Survive as an Entrepreneur. It’s on Amazon now. How are you doing, Josh?

Appreciate you coming on. Appreciate you coming on. So what’s going on these days with COVID? with you guys, how are you guys how your business

Josh York  0:52

Couldn’t be better, man couldn’t be better. There’s always dark and the there’s always there’s always there’s always dark. And when there’s dark, there’s always light, you just got to search for it. I don’t want to come across sounding insensitive. But at the end of the day, it’s all about one thing positivity. You know, like the comebacks always stronger than a setback. And, you know, when you have the right mindset, you can overcome anything. And obviously, pain has to be involved with growth. And right now, you know, I’m not saying what’s going on isn’t real. But you know, it’s testing a lot of people and those who are mentally tough those who have a growth mindset of those are the ones that are going to succeed. Definitely. Absolutely.

So are you ma’am, you guys are uniquely fit to be better equipped for this type of situation in most gyms because you’re already having that workout from their facility. So now we’re just adding a maybe technology to it. Right? Is that so how have you adapted? Tell me about that?

Josh York  1:45

Yeah, well, believe it or not, our business is actually really booming right now. So we’re, you know, COVID has been very beneficial to us. You know, and again, I’m, I’m a person that goes to the gym every day too. So I you know, I hate to see that gyms are struggling because I don’t want anyone to really have to struggle. But you know, a lot of people are just not comfortable going to the gym anymore at the moment, you know that? Is that gonna change? 100%? You know, look, people think this pandemics gonna be here forever. I know, it’s you know, you know, we’re in mass the rest of your life, like people just gotta understand like, this is gonna pass. As I always say this too shall pass. And that applies to everything success that applies to failure. But, you know, we’ve definitely what what what’s happened is it’s allowed a lot of people to taste our service. And once you taste our service, and you realize what a fantastic service it is. You just get hooked. Yeah, I

mean, you guys. It says here 635 plus cities ha served. How does I mean, that’s a lot of cities. Are you how many franchises you guys have right now?

Yeah, we, we just hit 256. And we’re in 31 states, and we’re in three countries about to enter into our next country.

Wow, that’s a blessing thing, guys. That’s awesome. That is awesome. So how so let’s talk about your journey. Can we that’s what so on this podcast, we’d like to talk about the journey. We talked about the ups and downs and everything it took to get where you are. I mean, you guys are doing gangbusters right now. And I want to know how it started. If you don’t mind. Let’s talk about the early days. Sure, sure. You

know, I’ve always been in the fitness love training people. I like to always say though, a trainer is just like a doctor, right? A doctor without patients is unemployed. And a trainer without clients is unemployed. And they sort of say to myself, how can I I make money when I’m not working? But you know, I did what you’re supposed to do, you know, you’re supposed to go to school, get a degree, you know, which I have my thoughts on. And then you’re supposed to go into the, you know, the workforce and get a nine to five job and that’s what I did. And here I am, I gave up a very successful high level six figure earnings of being a trainer to go to marketing job making, you know, $35,000 a year and I was just miserable. You know, I’m in an office with people who are just miserable and unhappy and just so much negativity and I can’t I can’t be around negativity, I just can’t, I can’t I can’t associate with it. I’ll cut off a family member. If they’re negative, I just don’t roll like that. And I like to always say I turn negatives into positives. But you know, it’s great making a lot of money as a trainer. The problem is, you know, that short term, you know, you can’t be a trainer your whole life. It’s just not scalable. And I used to try to figure out you know, but I figure everything out always every no always gets me closer to a yes. And I was like, You know what, I got to leave this, leave this place and go back into fitness. That’s what I love. It’s my passion. And then one day, one of my clients came in late and said, Josh, wishing, come to my house. I just don’t have any equipment. And that kind of stuck with me all day. I was like, wow, this is like, it’s like one of those ideas where it’s like, why didn’t I think it is?
